Reading in the Civic Hall

IN RHEINSBERG

A DEFA DOCUMENTARY FILM FROM 1982

Film screening attended by members of the Academy of Arts: director Volker Koepp and landscape architect and garden heritage conservator Detlef Karg. Helke Misselwitz, director and—since 2024—Director of the Film and Media Art Section, will moderate the discussion.

Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 2 p.m.

Civic Hall / Bürgersaal (Seestraße 9–10), Rheinsberg. Free admission.

The Academy of Arts—specifically its Film and Media Art and Architecture sections—together with the City of Rheinsberg, invite you to a Sunday matinee on November 1, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the city’s civic hall (*Bürgersaal*). Residents of Rheinsberg and visitors to the city are cordially invited to attend. Admission is free. This will be followed by a guided tour of the palace park with Detlef Karg.

In 1982, Detlef Karg—like several Rheinsberg residents—participated in the filming process and appears in the movie. He will accompany interested guests on a walk through the palace park. His work in heritage conservation was dedicated to securing, restoring, and preserving historical cultural assets for posterity. The restoration of the Rheinsberg Palace Park ranks among his greatest successes and fondest memories. He has been a member of the Architecture Section of the Academy of Arts since 1993; he served as State Conservator from 1991 to 1999 and, from 1999 onwards, as Director of the Brandenburg State Office for Monument Preservation and the State Archaeological Museum.

The film offers an exploration of a chapter of Prussian history, focusing on Frederick II and his brother Henry, both of whom left their mark on the architecture and landscape of the small Brandenburg town of Rheinsberg. Past and present are interwoven through conversations with Rheinsberg residents, palace staff, and construction workers—capturing their observations on history, their understanding of heritage preservation and the culture of remembrance, and the construction work carried out in 1981 and 1982.

Inaugural Tucholsky Literary Festival

“We want to make memories that sparks!” is a quote from Kurt Tucholsky. It's great that the first Tucholsky Literature Festival is able to bring back such memories!

We would like to thank everyone who contributed: the many guests who attended our events over three days, the authors, all participants and supporters.

And we will do everything we can to ensure that the festival can continue in 2027.

Alfred Wegener Museum

Since 2009 the Alfred Wegener Museum in Zechlinerhütte belongs to our department.
As a child Alfred Wegener (1880-1930) spent his vacations there. He was a "Viking of science" who wanted to discover the secrets of nature with his own observations. He founded the theory of plate tectonics and undertook four trips to the polar region. He died during his great Greenland expedition in 1930.
The museum presents the life of the researcher and raises awareness of questions about climate change.

We stand with Israel

Kurt Tucholsky was of Jewish descent. The museum has been working on Jewish topics for over 30 years, has researched and documented the life of Tucholsky's friend Else Weil, who was murdered in Auschwitz, has been working with the Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Studienwerk for years, initiated the laying of stumbling blocks in Rheinsberg and much more – a clear commitment to the right to exist of Jews and the State of Israel is important to us as part of our own cultural identity.
